250W / 350W. Watts set the ceiling; what you feel on a grade is how much pulling power is available low in the range, where a climb from a standstill actually happens.

Vancouver is not a flat city, and a bike specified for one is obvious within a week. Assistance that holds its character on a sustained grade, rather than fading as the motor heats, is the difference between arriving comfortable and arriving determined never to take that route again.

02 Range

Up to 55 km claimed, and what that means

Up to 55 km claimed, 10.05-65 km range or 6.7Ah-40 km range. Charging takes 3.5 hr, and that is the figure that actually shapes your week — a pack you top up overnight without thinking about it beats a bigger one you have to plan around.

Every battery is a consumable, and how you treat it decides whether that means five years or two. Charging to full only when you need the full range, keeping it off the charger once it is there, and storing it indoors through winter are worth more to its lifespan than any figure on the spec sheet.

Up to 55 km is the manufacturer's figure, measured on flat ground, in warm weather, with a light rider holding a steady low speed. Vancouver hills, winter temperatures and stop-start traffic all cost you range. 03 Slowing down

Tektro HD-E350 Hydraulic Disc, 20" x 2.0" tyres. Stopping distance is set by the contact patch as much as by the caliper: hardware can only ask for as much grip as the tyre has to give, which is why both are quoted here rather than just the one that sounds impressive.

04 Comfort

Toray Premium Carbon frame. Fit decides whether a bike is still being ridden in month three, and it is the one specification a photograph cannot tell you — reach, standover and saddle height interact, and two riders of the same height with different inseams want genuinely different setups. It weighs 15.3 kg, which is worth knowing before you commit if it has to come up a flight of stairs or onto a bus rack at the end of the ride.

Fit is the specification that decides whether a bike gets ridden after the first month, and it is the one that cannot be judged from a photograph. Reach, standover and saddle height interact — two riders of the same height with different inseams want genuinely different setups, and the adjustment range is what lets a bike belong to you rather than merely fit you.

05 Assist

Transmission: Shimano Altus M370 Derailleur & Shifter or Microshift RD-M46L / 9 speed // Gear Ratio : 52T/28T to 52T/11T, Throttle: Add Throttle / No throttle. Gearing decides what the motor is asked to do: the right gear on a climb keeps you spinning and keeps the drive unit cool and efficient, and the wrong one grinds through your knees and your range at the same time. Assistance runs to 32 km/h; past that the motor stops helping and the drivetrain is doing all of it, which is exactly when the spread of gears starts to matter.

The drivetrain is what riders upgrade first and shop for last. Chain, cassette and pads are consumables on any bike and wear faster under assistance, so the practical question is not which groupset is fitted but how cheaply and quickly it can be serviced when it wears — which is a question about your shop, not your bike.
