Why riders choose the Dualtron Thunder III

What makes it a high-performance scooter.

Every figure below is labelled with where it comes from, so a manufacturer’s claim never reads as a measurement.

01 Motor

100 km/h on the flat

2 x 2500W, rated to 100 km/h. Vancouver has more hills than flat, and the fourth of them on the ride home is where an underpowered machine starts to fade.

What separates a good motor from a fast one is composure. A well-matched controller feeds power in smoothly enough that you stop thinking about it, holds a steady line through a corner under load, and does not surge when the road tips upward. That is the difference you feel on every ride, long after the top-speed number has stopped being interesting.

  • 100 km/hTop speed

Manufacturer power figures are measured on a bench, not on a hill with a rider on board. Use them to compare models, not to predict what you will feel.

02 The battery

170 km claimed, and what that means

170 km claimed, 72V 40Ah or LG or Samsung. The figure that shapes your week is not the maximum but the margin left at the end of an ordinary day, in the cold, with the lights on.

The number worth knowing is not how far it goes on a perfect day, but how far it still goes in February with a headwind and a cold pack. Batteries lose capacity in the cold and regain it when they warm; a pack with genuine headroom absorbs that, and one bought exactly to your commute length does not.

  • 170 kmClaimed range

170 km is the manufacturer's figure, measured on flat ground, in warm weather, with a light rider holding a steady low speed. Vancouver hills, winter temperatures and stop-start traffic all cost you range. We have not yet run our own road test on this one; when we do, the tested figure goes in the spec table beside the claim.

03 Control

11 inches of contact patch

Electric braking assistance / Front & Rear Nutt Hydraulic disc brakes, 11 inches tyres. Braking, tyre and suspension are one system and only as good as the weakest of the three: the best calipers stop nothing once the tyre lets go, and grip is what suspension exists to protect when the surface stops cooperating. All of it is working against 47.3 kg of machine before you add a rider, which is the load every stop has to absorb.

The wet-painted lines, steel plates and tram-smooth crossings this city is full of are the real test. Grip is not a number you can read off a page — it is contact patch, compound and how much the suspension keeps the tyre pressed to the road when the surface stops cooperating.

  • 11 inchesTyre
  • 47.3 kgWeight
  • 120 kgMax rider weight

Hydraulic discs give the best stopping force per finger, and they need bleeding eventually. Bring it in when the lever starts feeling soft rather than waiting for it to reach the bar.

04 Wet season

Seen in the dark at 4pm

IPX5 rated, Headlight: Dual LED Headlight · Taillight: Yes, 11 inches tyres. Half of the riding year here is wet and dark, which puts sealing and lighting in the same category as brakes rather than in the category of extras. Rubber Front and Rear, Adjustable Cartridge keeps the tyre pressed to a surface that stops cooperating the moment it rains.

Being seen matters more here than being dry. Half of the riding year is done in low light and rain, when a driver's attention is already stretched, and lighting that is genuinely bright and permanently mounted is worth more than any amount of reflective clothing you have to remember to put on.

  • IPX5Ingress rating
  • 11 inchesTyre

IPX5 covers rain and road spray. It does not cover immersion — riding through standing water, or pressure-washing the machine, will get water past that seal and into the controller, and no warranty covers it. Wipe it down instead.

47.3 kg to carry

47.3 kg, folded to 1208 × 317 × 577 mm. The number that decides whether a scooter gets used is rarely the range — it is whether you can carry it up a flight of stairs, into a boot or onto a bus rack without planning your day around it. Rated to 120 kg, so the weight it carries and the weight you carry are both accounted for.

A folding mechanism is the part that gets used most and inspected least. Latches loosen, hinges develop play, and a stem that has gone slightly loose is the most common thing we tighten on a bench. Fold it a few times before you buy, and check that same joint every few months after.

  • 47.3 kgWeight
  • 120 kgMax rider weight
  • 11 inchesTyre

47.3 kg is a two-handed lift for most people, not a one-handed one. If it has to go on a bus rack or up stairs daily, come and pick it up in the shop first.

I drove all the way from Seattle to bring my daughter's scooter to ProMechBC and I could not be more pleased with both the repairs and the customer service. I will definitely be bringing the scooter North of the border when it needs some love.

Recently had an accident with my Apollo Go — luckily nothing major was damaged, but it still needed some repair and replacement parts. Service was great, and I got my scooter back within a week. :D
