01 Climbing

Bafang 1000w 95Nm. Watts set the ceiling; what you feel on a grade is how much pulling power is available low in the range, where a climb from a standstill actually happens.

Vancouver is not a flat city, and a bike specified for one is obvious within a week. Assistance that holds its character on a sustained grade, rather than fading as the motor heats, is the difference between arriving comfortable and arriving determined never to take that route again.

02 The battery

How far, honestly

Up to 65km or 130km with Dual Battery claimed, Extended Range Dual-Battery 52v 30Ah or Standard Single-Battery. Charging takes 5 Hours, and that is the figure that actually shapes your week — a pack you top up overnight without thinking about it beats a bigger one you have to plan around.

Every battery is a consumable, and how you treat it decides whether that means five years or two. Charging to full only when you need the full range, keeping it off the charger once it is there, and storing it indoors through winter are worth more to its lifespan than any figure on the spec sheet.

Lithium packs lose capacity with age and with cold. A two-year-old battery in February will not do what a new one did in July, and no range figure on any page accounts for that.

03 Slowing down

Tektro Hydraulic Disc 180mm, and why it matters

Tektro Hydraulic Disc 180mm, 20” x 4" tyres. Stopping distance is set by the contact patch as much as by the caliper: hardware can only ask for as much grip as the tyre has to give, which is why both are quoted here rather than just the one that sounds impressive. Rated to 136.1 kg all in, that is the weight the brakes and the contact patch are being asked to arrest on a wet painted line.

An e-bike carries far more mass and speed than the bicycle it is descended from, and the brakes are the component most often carried over unchanged. Consistent lever feel at the bottom of a long descent — no fade, no wandering bite point — is what you are paying for, and it is invisible until the one time you need it.

BC requires a standard e-bike to stop from 32 km/h within 9 m on clean, level pavement. That is a dry-surface test — assume noticeably longer in Vancouver rain, and leave the gap to prove it.

04 Getting on

Fit decides whether a bike is still being ridden in month three, and it is the one specification a photograph cannot tell you — reach, standover and saddle height interact, and two riders of the same height with different inseams want genuinely different setups. It weighs 38.6 kg, which is worth knowing before you commit if it has to come up a flight of stairs or onto a bus rack at the end of the ride.

Fit is the specification that decides whether a bike gets ridden after the first month, and it is the one that cannot be judged from a photograph. Reach, standover and saddle height interact — two riders of the same height with different inseams want genuinely different setups, and the adjustment range is what lets a bike belong to you rather than merely fit you.

05 Gears

Gearing decides what the motor is asked to do: the right gear on a climb keeps you spinning and keeps the drive unit cool and efficient, and the wrong one grinds through your knees and your range at the same time. Assistance runs to 20mph/ 30mph; past that the motor stops helping and the drivetrain is doing all of it, which is exactly when the spread of gears starts to matter.

Assist cut-off is set by regulation, not by ambition, and a bike that keeps helping past the legal limit is a different legal class the moment it leaves the shop. Knowing where the motor stops and you start is worth understanding before you buy rather than after.

Pedal-assist levels are a controller setting, not a measurement. What one brand tunes into its middle level another spreads across two, so treat the count as a range of options rather than as a spec you can compare across bikes.
