Why riders choose the Thunder Pro Step-Thru

What makes it a premium step-through commuter e-bike.

Every figure below is labelled with where it comes from, so a manufacturer’s claim never reads as a measurement.

01 Power

Null, geared for gradient

Bafang Hub Motor 500W 48V G02 80 N.m. Watts set the ceiling; what you feel on a grade is how much pulling power is available low in the range, where a climb from a standstill actually happens.

Climbing is where an e-bike either justifies itself or does not. A drive unit with real torque in reserve turns the hill you avoid into the route you prefer, and it does it without asking you to hammer the pedals or slow to walking pace. That change in what you are willing to ride to is the whole reason people buy these.

  • 500 WMotor

Any climbing claim assumes a rider putting in their share. A throttle-only ascent drains the pack far faster than the range figure suggests.

02 Distance

Up to 150 km claimed, and what that means

Up to 150 km claimed, 48V 17.5Ah Samsung Li-ion. The figure that shapes your week is not the maximum but the margin left at the end of an ordinary day, in the cold, with the lights on.

Range is the most quoted figure in this category and the least reliable, because it is measured in the conditions most favourable to it. What actually shapes your week is charge time and how much margin you have left at the end of a normal day — a pack you top up twice a week without thinking about it beats a bigger one you have to plan around.

  • 150 kmClaimed range
  • 48 VBattery

Up to 150 km is the manufacturer's figure, measured on flat ground, in warm weather, with a light rider holding a steady low speed. Vancouver hills, winter temperatures and stop-start traffic all cost you range. We have not yet run our own road test on this one; when we do, the tested figure goes in the spec table beside the claim.

03 Brakes

Null, and why it matters

Hydraulic disc brakes - Tektro disc 180 mm, 27.5" x 2.10" tyres. Stopping distance is set by the contact patch as much as by the caliper: hardware can only ask for as much grip as the tyre has to give, which is why both are quoted here rather than just the one that sounds impressive.

Stopping distance is set by the tyre as much as by the caliper. The best brakes in the world cannot exceed the grip available, which is why contact patch, compound and pressure matter as much on a wet Vancouver morning as the hardware clamping the rotor.

  • 29.5 kgWeight

BC requires a standard e-bike to stop from 32 km/h within 9 m on clean, level pavement. That is a dry-surface test — assume noticeably longer in Vancouver rain, and leave the gap to prove it.

04 Getting on

Sized for 73"x28"x44"LxWxH

Size: 73"x28"x44"LxWxH, Step-Thru frame. Fit decides whether a bike is still being ridden in month three, and it is the one specification a photograph cannot tell you — reach, standover and saddle height interact, and two riders of the same height with different inseams want genuinely different setups. It weighs 29.5 kg, which is worth knowing before you commit if it has to come up a flight of stairs or onto a bus rack at the end of the ride.

Come and stand over it. Ten minutes with the saddle at the right height tells you more than any size chart, and it is the difference between a bike that disappears underneath you and one you are always slightly negotiating with.

  • Step-ThruFrame
  • 29.5 kgWeight

Height charts assume average proportions. Two riders at the same height with different inseams will want different setups, so treat any published range as a starting point and expect to move the saddle and bars.

05 Drivetrain

Null

Gears: Shimano Tourney TX50R7CT Shifter Plus 7-Speed · Chain: KMC chain, Throttle: Thumb Throttle. Gearing decides what the motor is asked to do: the right gear on a climb keeps you spinning and keeps the drive unit cool and efficient, and the wrong one grinds through your knees and your range at the same time.

The drivetrain is what riders upgrade first and shop for last. Chain, cassette and pads are consumables on any bike and wear faster under assistance, so the practical question is not which groupset is fitted but how cheaply and quickly it can be serviced when it wears — which is a question about your shop, not your bike.

Pedal-assist levels are a controller setting, not a measurement. What one brand tunes into its middle level another spreads across two, so treat the count as a range of options rather than as a spec you can compare across bikes.

Thunder Pro Step-Thru Long-Range Electric Bike

The Thunder Pro Step-Thru Electric Bike is a comfort-focused commuter e-bike designed for riders who want easy mounting, useful cargo capability, and extended riding range.

A 500W 48V Bafang G02 rear hub motor delivers up to 80 N·m of torque, providing practical assistance for starts, hills, and longer city routes. The 48V 17.5Ah Samsung battery offers approximately 840Wh of capacity and a listed range of up to 150 km under favourable conditions.

Step-Through Comfort and Suspension

The low step-through frame makes getting on and off easier, while the RST Blaze suspension fork helps absorb bumps and vibration from rough pavement and mixed urban surfaces.

A shock-absorbing seat post and Velo comfort saddle further improve comfort during longer rides.

Hydraulic Brakes and Shimano Gearing

Front and rear Tektro hydraulic disc brakes with 180 mm rotors provide controlled stopping performance, while the Shimano Tourney 7-speed drivetrain gives riders useful mechanical gearing for hills and everyday cycling.

A thumb throttle adds flexibility for starts and low-speed manoeuvring.

Practical Commuter Equipment

The Thunder Pro Step-Thru uses 27.5" × 2.10" Kenda tires and includes front and rear lighting, full fenders, a kickstand, bell, and a rear carrier rated for up to 25 kg of cargo.

At approximately 65 lb (29.5 kg), it is designed more for stability, range, and everyday utility than lightweight portability.

I drove all the way from Seattle to bring my daughter's scooter to ProMechBC and I could not be more pleased with both the repairs and the customer service. I will definitely be bringing the scooter North of the border when it needs some love.

Recently had an accident with my Apollo Go — luckily nothing major was damaged, but it still needed some repair and replacement parts. Service was great, and I got my scooter back within a week. :D
