Why riders choose the Thunder Step-Thru

What makes it a comfort-focused step-through commuter e-bike.

Every figure below is labelled with where it comes from, so a manufacturer’s claim never reads as a measurement.

01 Power

Null, geared for gradient

Bafang Hub Motor 500W 48V G02 80 N.m. Watts set the ceiling; what you feel on a grade is how much pulling power is available low in the range, where a climb from a standstill actually happens.

Vancouver is not a flat city, and a bike specified for one is obvious within a week. Assistance that holds its character on a sustained grade, rather than fading as the motor heats, is the difference between arriving comfortable and arriving determined never to take that route again.

  • 500 WMotor

Any climbing claim assumes a rider putting in their share. A throttle-only ascent drains the pack far faster than the range figure suggests.

02 Range

How far, honestly

48V 15Ah Samsung Li-ion or 48V 20Ah Samsung Li-ion. The figure that shapes your week is not the maximum but the margin left at the end of an ordinary day, in the cold, with the lights on.

Range is the most quoted figure in this category and the least reliable, because it is measured in the conditions most favourable to it. What actually shapes your week is charge time and how much margin you have left at the end of a normal day — a pack you top up twice a week without thinking about it beats a bigger one you have to plan around.

Lithium packs lose capacity with age and with cold. A two-year-old battery in February will not do what a new one did in July, and no range figure on any page accounts for that.

03 Stopping

Null, and why it matters

Tektro Mechanical disc brakes - Tektro disc 180 mm, 26x1.95" tyres. Stopping distance is set by the contact patch as much as by the caliper: hardware can only ask for as much grip as the tyre has to give, which is why both are quoted here rather than just the one that sounds impressive.

Nobody shops on brakes and everybody remembers them. The right question is not how hard it stops on a dry test but whether the fifth hard stop feels like the first, in the rain, with luggage and a passenger-weight load on the rack.

  • 26.3 kgWeight

Mechanical discs need the cable adjusting as the pads wear. It is a two-minute job and the difference between a good lever and a vague one, so do not put it off.

04 Comfort

Step-Thru frame, and what it means

Size: 73"x28"x42" LxWxH, Step-Thru frame. Fit decides whether a bike is still being ridden in month three, and it is the one specification a photograph cannot tell you — reach, standover and saddle height interact, and two riders of the same height with different inseams want genuinely different setups. It weighs 26.3 kg, which is worth knowing before you commit if it has to come up a flight of stairs or onto a bus rack at the end of the ride.

The frame is the one part you cannot upgrade later. Everything bolted to it can be changed as it wears or as your taste changes, which is why the material, the geometry and the honesty of the joins are worth more attention than the components hanging off them.

  • Step-ThruFrame
  • 26.3 kgWeight

Height charts assume average proportions. Two riders at the same height with different inseams will want different setups, so treat any published range as a starting point and expect to move the saddle and bars.

05 Assist

Null

Gears: Shimano Tourney TX50R7CT Shifter Plus 7-Speed · Chain: KMC chain, Throttle: Thumb Throttle. Gearing decides what the motor is asked to do: the right gear on a climb keeps you spinning and keeps the drive unit cool and efficient, and the wrong one grinds through your knees and your range at the same time.

The drivetrain is what riders upgrade first and shop for last. Chain, cassette and pads are consumables on any bike and wear faster under assistance, so the practical question is not which groupset is fitted but how cheaply and quickly it can be serviced when it wears — which is a question about your shop, not your bike.

Pedal-assist levels are a controller setting, not a measurement. What one brand tunes into its middle level another spreads across two, so treat the count as a range of options rather than as a spec you can compare across bikes.

I drove all the way from Seattle to bring my daughter's scooter to ProMechBC and I could not be more pleased with both the repairs and the customer service. I will definitely be bringing the scooter North of the border when it needs some love.

Recently had an accident with my Apollo Go — luckily nothing major was damaged, but it still needed some repair and replacement parts. Service was great, and I got my scooter back within a week. :D
